Wigginton strengthen their grip

Wigginton Tennis Club’s first men’s team continues to set the pace in division one. They recorded a good home win over David Lloyd Harrogate, despite a spirited 22 games from the visiting Ryan Carrick and Ed Appleyard. Poppleton lead the chasing pack with an 11-1 defeat of Wigginton’s second team, thanks in part to a solid 30 from Nick Turnbull and Josh Hunt. David Lloyd York are currently third, following a convincing win at Copmanthorpe. A 29 game haul from Jack Batchelor and Charlie Kirk was the highlight for the visitors.
The Starbeck club from Knaresborough are setting the early pace in division two, having beaten Sutton Upon Derwent, including a splendid 28 games from John Rowe and Sam Taster-Grindley. Wilberfoss had a fine home win over Wetherby, a victory based in large part on a 28 from Alex Gurnell and Tony Downing.
Appleton Roebuck are second in division three, having demolished Poppleton’s second team at the weekend. All the Roebuck pairs of Paul Kaye/Tom Shouksmith, Geoff Bullock/Rob Jones and Ed Ziegler/Phil Bremner notched up scores in the twenties. Rowntree Park lead the division, a superb 31 from Angus Smith and Jonny Kay helping them to overcome Harrogate Spa.
Despite having no fixture at the weekend, Selby lead division four. Knaresborough are their closest rivals and had a fine home win over Strensall, a 30 game total from David Hewson and Steve Duckenfield being the centrepiece of the victory. A superb 32 from Zac Sheppard and Joel Grainger helped Heworth to beat Starbeck’s second team, whilst York 3 had a fine win away at Wetherby 2.
The one match in division five saw David Lloyd York 3 edge home against Copmanthorpe 3, the 27 total from Michael Houlsby and Ben Loden proving key to the home team’s victory. The Harrogate based club Harlow are setting the early pace in division six, following a 10-2 home triumph over Wilberfoss 2. Alex Priestley and Cassius Petrovan top scored for the hosts with an excellent 29.
In division seven, 22 games from Bishopthorpe’s top pair Sam Watson and Will Rice was not enough to stop Knaresborough from recording a 9-3 victory. A barnstorming 32 from Brad and Mike Triffitt helped see the visitors home. The two games in division eight saw convincing victories for Heworth 2 and Selby 2, over Poppleton 4 and New Earswick respectively.
Wigginton continue to set the pace

Defending champions Wigginton 1 have continued their successful start to the defence of their title. On the bank holiday weekend, in the top division’s only fixture they had a stunning 12-0 victory over Boston Spa 1 and they backed this up yesterday with another 12-0 victory, this time away at York, Ollie Hicks and James Denmark starring with a 33 game haul. Wigginton’s nearest rivals David Lloyd York and Poppleton played each other, Poppleton narrowly prevailing 7-5. Wigginton’s second team had a fine win against Boston Spa while David Lloyd Harrogate beat Copmanthorpe 11-1.
In division two Fulford lost to Starbeck by the narrowest possible margin of 6.5-5.5. The Harrogate based Racquets club had a convincing win over York’s second team whilst Wetherby overcame David Lloyd York 2. Division three saw Appleton Roebuck score a fine away win at Harrogate Spa. Rowntree Park’s two teams played each other, resulting in a 12-0 victory for their first string, with Jonny Kay and James Moss dropping only 2 of the 36 games. Bubwith put last week’s defeat behind them by seeing off Racquets 2 by 11-1. Poppleton 2 went down at home to Wigginton’s third team.
Selby are setting the early pace in division four, having won all three of their opening matches. This week’s victims were Knaresborough. Starbeck and Wetherby’s second teams served up a thriller, with each team recording 54 games. Heworth had a fine win away at Strensall, featuring a solid 28 from Zac Sheppard and Will Ellis. David Lloyd Harrogate 2 travelled to York 3 and an all round team effort saw them prevail 9.5-2.5. There were only two matches in division five, Pocklington having withdrawn from the league. Boston Spa 2 went down at home to David Lloyd York 3, with a 26 from Sam Toomey and David Lamb the highlight for the visitors. Copmanthorpe 2 were narrowly beaten at home by Fulford 2.
Biggest winners in Division six were Riccall, who put York 4 to the sword with strong performances by all three pairs of Andrew Dunning/Stephen Davis, Jonathon Foy/Ray Pahang and Nick Clemshaw/Scott Anderson. Appleton Roebuck 2 lost their opening match of the season to the visiting Harlow, whilst Wilbefoss 2 recorded a narrow 7-5 success over Sutton Upon Derwent 2.
Strensall 2 were able to field only two pairs in their match with Knaresborough 2 in division seven and went down 2-10. Bishopthorpe’s 55 games at Sheriff Hutton were enough to give them a victory by 8.5 points to 3.5. Poppleton 3 demolished Dunnington 12-0. Defending division eight champions Bubwith 2 put last week’s defeat behind them with an 8-4 win over New Earswick. David Lloyd York 4 beat Selby 2 11-1, the 28 game haul by Mick Douglas and Richard Doughty being the highlight for the home side.
